2013 Best Emergency Preparedness Apps – App #1

This week, Preparis is focusing on five of the best emergency preparedness apps for iPhones. With a smartphone within reach of nearly everyone, emergency and disaster management organizations are reaching out to the public through customized apps. These organizations are providing tools for the public to utilize when they need it most.

For businesses, encouraging employees to download disaster recovery apps helps by enabling access to emergency plans, checklists, and response protocols helps establish a culture of preparedness within your organization. We’ll kick off our series with a free disaster apps for iOS and on Android from the government’s response arm: the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The FEMA App provides an easy to use environment for users to prepare and respond to different aspects of a disaster. The main menu is divided into seven boxes containing different types of applications. A few examples are:

“Are you prepared?” provides procedures for preparing and responding to specific disasters, a checklist for building a home emergency kit, and a location for the user to input meeting locations for their family.

“Are you a disaster survivor?” lists links to contact FEMA for recovery assistance, and even apply for assistance directly using the web. The links integrate with the phone to send an email to the correct person or call the correct number.

“Recovery” includes tips for disaster recovery financially, emotionally, and physically. This portion of the app includes interactive maps for locating shelters and recovery centers, blog postings, and ways to help volunteer during a disaster.
